UTILITIES TERRY LAHMAN
Vol. 9, No. 1 (PC Magazine)
PCREMOTE
Command
Terry Lahman January 16, 1990 (Utilities)
Purpose: To permit accessing and operating an off-site computer from your own
keyboard by using a modem link.
Format: PCREMOTE [/M] [/2] [/F] [/D]
Remarks: PCREMOTE is actually two programs in one. Entered without the /M
switch it becomes RAM-resident on the off-site computer to be
controlled. This machine and its modem must be left powered on to
receive calls, but may otherwise be used normally or left unattended.
To gain access and control over the off-site computer, execute
PCREMOTE /M from the command line of your own machine. You will be
prompted to enter a phone number, which will then be dialed
automatically. Upon connection, the off-site computer will prompt
you for a password, which you must enter correctly within three tries.
The default password is PC Magazine (see the note below).
After password verification, you can execute all text-based
(non-graphical) programs on the off-site computer by entering the
appropriate keystrokes at your own keyboard. (The keyboard of the
off-site machine remains active, as well.) All screen displays that
appear on the off-site machine will also appear on your monitor.
To terminate PCREMOTE enter Alt-x and confirm your intention by
responding yes at the prompt window. Both computers will then hang up
the phone and your machine will return to DOS. The off-site computer
will continue to execute any program that was begun before PCREMOTE
was terminated. The off-site machine can thus print out large files
while you are off line, given sufficient paper.
PCREMOTE defaults to COM1 at 1200 bps. Using the optional /2 switch
on its command line will engage COM2 insead of COM1. Similarly, the
/F switch sets the bps rate to 2400. If you are using a CGA card and
snow is a problem, use the /D (Desnow) option on the command line.
Note: You can change your password with DEBUG. A new password of up to 20
characters may be entered, within single quotes, at address 1F3h of
PCREMOTE.COM. The length of the new password (not including the
single quotes) must also be entered, in hex, at address 1F1h.
ADDENDUM FROM ANTHISTLE SYSTEMS, 13TH. JUNE 1990

execute programs from the DOS prompt, to key in information or
to see your screen. It can only be used if your computer is
equipped with a modem.
IN THIS VERSION THE PASSWORD IS ======> PAYROLL
It is possible to change the password (see the note above) but
we recommend you not do so as if we need to call you on a technical
support problem we may not be able to connect if we do not know
what you changed it to. You still have security as we will not
be able to access your computer unless PCREMOTE is active (steps
2 and 5 below). Use the following procedure:
1. Exit from any menu systems to the DOS prompt.
2. Change directory to the \PAYPGMS directory, example
C: { or D: etc., whichever disk PAYROLL USA is installed on }
CD \PAYPGMS
3. Telephone Anthistle Systems to ensure we are available to
help at that time and to tell us your modem speed, we can
use either 1200 or 2400 baud (2400 is better if your modem
can handle it). Also give us your modem telephone number.
4. Ensure your modem is connected to the telephone number
you gave us in step 3 and is switched on.
5. Start up PCREMOTE with whatever command line parameters
are needed, example at the DOS prompt enter
PCREMOTE /F
6. We will telephone your modem. All long distance charges
for this call will be billed back to you. If you fail to
reimburse us for the cost of the call your PAYROLL USA
tax update service will be suspended until you do pay what
you owe plus any service charges levied for reminder letters.
It may be possible for you to call our computer, or for us
to call yours collect, and to avoid the possibility of us
getting stuck with an unpaid long distance charge we would
obviously prefer this arrangement. Our telephone company
charges about U.S. 60 cents a minute for calls to most
U.S. cities (more to Alaska or Hawaii). WE REGRET WE CANNOT
INITIATE MODEM TELEPHONE CALLS UNLESS YOU ARE A PAID UP
REGISTERED USER.
